Former Manchester United star Scott McTominay could be heading for a reunion with his old teammate Casemiro in the summer, with Serie A appearing as a possible destination for the midfielder. This follows the Brazilian's confirmation of his departure from Old Trafford when his contract expires this season, concluding four years at the club.
Man United spent an initial £60million to acquire Casemiro, potentially rising to £70million with all add-ons included, as he was regarded as their answer to problems in midfield. Whilst the serial trophy winner from Real Madrid demonstrated flashes of that calibre, there were numerous doubts surrounding the deal and whether it would prove successful.
More recently, United have witnessed increasingly reliable displays from the Brazilian, especially under Michael Carrick's management. This campaign, the veteran has posed a particular danger in both penalty areas, netting five goals in the Premier League whilst simultaneously controlling the midfield.
It might prove frustrating for supporters that they're only now witnessing this standard from Casemiro, though they'll need to savour those displays whilst they're available. Within months, the midfielder will become a free agent, and several potential destinations are being identified.
According to a report from The Sun, the 34-year-old remains eager to prolong his playing career in Europe as he examines his next possible move. Multiple leagues could represent an option, including a return to La Liga, where he excelled for numerous years with Real Madrid.
Casemiro retains property in the Spanish capital, though that might not be the sole destination he could relocate to upon becoming a free agent. The report suggests Italy has emerged as a potential option to continue competing at elite level, having witnessed his former teammate Luka Modric flourish following his switch to AC Milan.
That wouldn't be the sole recognisable face he would encounter, should Casemiro join one of the heavyweights in Serie A, as Scott McTominay is presently excelling with Napoli. The 29-year-old contributed to the Azzurri's league triumph last campaign, alongside being crowned the club's player of the season.
McTominay and Casemiro featured together 40 times in midfield for Manchester United, as their careers overlapped. They secured 28 of those matches, demonstrating a solid partnership, before the departure for the Scottish international was finalised.
It remains uncertain whether a transfer to Italy could witness him linking up with McTominay at Napoli, or whether he would sign for one of the other sides and face him in the division. For the moment, though, it appears time is still being devoted to determining the next step.

Whilst Europe entices Casemiro, there have also been suggestions of a potential move to the United States for Major League Soccer. He was recently seen holidaying with his family in Florida, jetting off to Miami, but there's no evidence that it was to negotiate any sort of agreement.
In the interim, he'll be strategising his future moves whilst aiming to conclude his tenure with Man United on a high note. Carrick recently showered praise on the star midfielder during a press conference, stating: "I've got to say, Case has been fantastic since I came in, really, on and off the pitch.
"Experience is a great thing if you use it in the right way. And again, I think over time, being a senior player here is almost the responsibility of the example and helping the young players, helping the rest of the boys and passing on your experiences in a positive way.
"He's been top since I came in, in so many ways, and he's been a pleasure to work with, and I look forward to continuing with him for a few months yet."
