“Yes, football is fun”–Player puts on brave face as Manchester United exit leads to relegation battle

Christian Eriksen has put a brave face on life at Wolfsburg, despite swapping life at Manchester United for a relegation battle.

Kicker have comments from the 34-year-old today. The Dane Is insistent that he’s more than happy with life at the Bundesliga club.

Eriksen left Manchester United on a free transfer in the summer window, bringing an end to three seasons at Old Trafford.

He made 107 appearances in that time, scoring eight goals in that time, acting as a consistent presence under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

Dragged out decision in search of game time

Christian Eriksen took his time to make his choice on his next club during the summer. Sport Witness covered comments from the veteran on how much he enjoyed his time off while making that choice.

Ultimately, Wolfsburg won the race for his signature, with Eriksen joining on a two-year deal until June 2027. He’s been a regular starter since, with 21 appearances in all competitions to date.

It’s been a difficult campaign for them, though. The German club currently sit 15th in the Bundesliga with 20 points from 23 games. That’s left them just above the relegation play-off spot on goal difference.

Relegation battle wasn’t expected

Their recent form has seen them struggle to pull away from the relegation battle. But Eriksen isn’t concerned, despite their goals having been to qualify for Europe.

“I’ve actually mostly been on the other side,” he said.

“At many of the clubs I’ve played for, it was more about finishing in the top 10. Brentford was perhaps the only exception.

“And at VfL, it’s actually my first time fighting relegation. But that’s football; in the end, it’s an experience that comes with the territory.

“I can handle it! Of course, you’d rather be on the winning team. But that doesn’t always work out. Then it’s about getting back on track.

“For us, it’s a battle right now, and many little things are going against us, which makes it even harder. Nevertheless, I’m positive when I see how we’re working.”

When asked if he’d made the right decision, choosing Wolfsburg after Manchester United, Eriksen said: “Yes, football is fun. I wanted to play football, and I’m doing that here.”
