£47m flop was "one of the best in the world", now he'll never play for Man Utd again - opinion

It's gearing up to be a seismic summer - and not just for Manchester United.

Will Arne Slot still be in charge at Liverpool? Will Pep Guardiola finally call it quits at Manchester City? Who will be named as Thomas Frank's permanent successor at Tottenham Hotspur?

Back at Old Trafford, meanwhile, the club's own managerial future has yet to be decided, albeit with Michael Carrick's interim audition having gone from strength to strength in recent weeks, with five wins from his six Premier League games in charge.

Whether the Englishman is handed the reins or not might depend on Champions League qualification, although regardless, the post-season period will mark a defining moment for both United and the INEOS regime.

Indeed, for all the talk over who will permanently replace Ruben Amorim in the dugout, the playing squad also needs to be put under the microscope.

Every Man Utd player who could leave this summer

Starting in the goalkeeping ranks, the emergence of Senne Lammens has firmly ended Altay Bayindir's hopes of ever cementing a starting berth, with the Turkey international in line for an exit, having failed to convince in his early-season appearances under Amorim.

Elsewhere, there could well be minimal change in the defensive unit, although it remains to be seen if Harry Maguire will pen a new deal, with the Englishman - who has started every game under Carrick - out of contract this summer.

It has already been confirmed that Casemiro will move on to pastures new amid the expiry of his own deal, while midfield colleague Manuel Ugarte is likely to depart, following notable interest from the Turkish Super Lig.

Whether Bruno Fernandes joins that pair out the door could well be decided after the upcoming World Cup, although the end should be in sight for fellow playmaker, Mason Mount, amid a third injury-hit season in a row for the 27-year-old.

As for the forward ranks, Joshua Zirkzee - who hasn't started at all under Carrick - appears the only current first-team player under threat in that department, while away from Old Trafford, the loan pairing of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are unlikely to ever feature for their parent club again.

The same is also true of Rasmus Hojlund, with the young Dane expected to sign permanently for Napoli if certain conditions are met, having netted 12 times since his move back to Serie A.

That form suggests that if a return to Manchester were to occur for the 22-year-old, there wouldn't exactly be many objections, although that can't be said for everyone.

£47m Man Utd flop should never play for the club again

The summer in which Hojlund arrived at the Theatre of Dreams back in 2023 remains a potential crossroads moment for the club, with United fresh off the back of an encouraging first season under Erik ten Hag, following a Carabao Cup triumph and third-place league finish.

Talk was rife over moves for the likes of Harry Kane and Declan Rice, although the Red Devils instead gambled on Hojlund and Mount, alongside the marquee capture of Champions League finalist, Andre Onana.

Signed for a fee of around £47.2m - having been available on a free a year earlier - the Cameroon international had caught the eye during Inter Milan's European run that season, hailed as "one of the best in the world" by Pep Guardiola, ahead of the showpiece meeting with Manchester City.

Acting as a Manuel Neuer-esque sweeper-keeper, Onana was masterful even in defeat on the day, sparking hopes that he would be the perfect ball-playing replacement for the departing David De Gea back in Manchester.

Unfortunately, right from the off, things did not go to plan, with the ex-Ajax stopper lobbed on his Old Trafford debut in a pre-season friendly against Lens, comically left tangled in his own net in front of the Stretford End.

That set the tone for what was to follow, with Onana memorably producing a bizarre attempted dive up against Taiwo Awoniyi in the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, while making error after error during United's car-crash Champions League group stage run.

There was a far more fruitful start to 2024/25, including a stellar double save at Crystal Palace, although again it was in Europe, in particular, where he faltered, producing two blunders away in Lyon following a war of words with Nemanja Matic.

That appeared to be the beginning of the end, while his performance away in Grimsby looked to be the final straw, subsequently shipped out on loan to Turkish side Trabzonspor for the season.

The 29-year-old, whose move didn't include an option to buy, reportedly has a desire to return to Old Trafford this summer, although the form of Lammens should surely put a pin in those hopes, with the young Belgian already looking the club's best bit of business since the capture of Bruno Fernandes.

Manchester United are marching on under Michael Carrick.

Calm, unassuming but dominant in his own box - as was evident against Everton last time out - Lammens is everything that Onana simply isn't, with the greatest compliment being that you often don't notice the 23-year-old during games.

Intentional or not, Onana always appeared keen to be the centre of attention, with one mistake - like away in Lyon - typically leading to another.

In the case of Lammens, by contrast, the ex-Royal Antwerp man had an early scare at the Hill Dickinson following an errant early pass, yet proceeded to produce a commanding Man of the Match display.

The jersey is now his to lose for the foreseeable, ensuring Onana shouldn't be seen in a United shirt again, with a summer exit surely the best solution for all parties.

The polarising 'keeper may have arrived with a stellar reputation, yet his time in English football is not one that will be looked back upon fondly.
