The Magpies lost their last league match away to Manchester City last weekend but beat Qarabag 3-2 in midweek to progress into the last 16 of the Champions League 9-3 on aggregate.

Eddie Howe’s side welcomed back Sven Botman and Yoane Wissa following three games out but were without Jacob Ramsey due to a hamstring issue.

Newcastle are already without several key players, including Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento. Here’s Newcastle United’s injury list and expected return dates:

Jacob Ramsey

Ramsey missed Tuesday’s 3-2 Champions League play-off second-leg win over Qarabag with a hamstring issue.

Howe said after the game: “We hope there's nothing serious. He's just felt his hamstring, an awareness, a tightness in his hamstring. He had a scan and that came back all clear.

“Hopefully it'll be a quick improvement and he'll be back involved hopefully for our next game. But let's wait and see.”

Expected return date

Manchester United (H), 04/03.

Malick Thiaw

Thiaw is suspended against Qarabag after picking up his third Champions League yellow card of the campaign in the first-leg.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said on Monday “Yeah, it's going to be a blow for us. I said that when his suspension was confirmed, a big loss for us at the heart of our defence. I think Malick has been hugely impressive this season, model of consistency. I actually think the last few games, again, has been some of his strongest of the season. I think he's, considering the amount of games he's played, really, really good in that sense.

“I think on the ball, he's come back to being at his very best level. I think defensively he's been superb. I think he's been an incredible signing for us. He's a great lad as well. Settled in really quickly to the group. So yeah, he'll be a miss, but fingers crossed it's just for one game.”

Expected return date

Everton (H), 28/02.

Bruno Guimaraes

Guimaraes, who had only just returned from four matches out with an ankle injury, was forced off in stoppage time against Spurs with a hamstring issue.

Following further assessment, the Brazilian has been ruled out until April.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “I think the timeframe will be the timeframe really on this injury, I don't think there's any miracle cure for him. I think it will be a couple of months, as you say, we're probably looking at the end of the international break in March for his return.

“Massive blow for us, key stage of the season. He's devastated but it is what it is, we can't do anything about it, we just have to try and get him back safely and other players have to step up in his absence.”

Expected return date

AFC Bournemouth (H) 18/04.

Lewis Miley

Miley last featured in the 1-1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain. He was on the bench for the following match against Liverpool but hasn’t been in the squad since.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “Lewis Miley is still a little bit to go I think. Again, without going into too much medical stuff which is beyond me, it was a dead leg so that was factually correct but I think it disturbed a bit of the muscle.

“Again, I don't think he's too far away, nothing more than a week, a couple of weeks maximum but I think we've been told that we've got to be careful with him.”

Expected return date

Manchester City (H), 07/03.

Tino Livramento

Livramento was forced off during the FA Cup third round penalty shootout win over AFC Bournemouth with a hamstring injury.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “He's doing well. I believe he's having a scan today, a second scan to see the progress of his hamstring. Fingers crossed it's good news and I think if it is, he'll be back running outside.

“I think we're still probably five to six weeks away. We're looking at an early March return, providing everything goes well.”

Expected return date

Manchester United (H) 04/03.

Fabian Schar

Schar has undergone surgery to repair the ankle ligament damage he sustained in the 4-3 comeback victory over Leeds United on January 7.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “He had a successful surgery yesterday, which is great news. Everything went according to plan. I think, difficult to give a definitive [date] but roughly around three months, I think, will be the diagnosis that we'll work towards if it's any quicker than great.

“But I think we need to give Fabian now the time to recover, it's quite a serious injury.”

Expected return date

April 2026.

Emil Krafth

Krafth picked up a knee injury on international duty with Sweden and after months of struggling to recover has undergone knee surgery.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “Emil's had an operation on his knee so I think in all likelihood it looks like the season is over, which is a real blow for us.

“He first suffered the problem on international duty. We hoped that he could come back and be OK, but it was clear in training recently that he wasn't going to get to the level needed and that he needed a surgical intervention.”
