Crystal Palace need to find a new manager as they look to replace Oliver Glasner.
Crystal Palace’s search for a new manager is well underway after Oliver Glasner confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season back in January. Glasner has done fine work at Selhurst Park, guiding the Eagles to a first-ever FA Cup and European qualification.
This season has been a turbulent one, and the club’s handling of Marc Guehi and Jean-Philippe Mateta likely played a key role in Glasner deciding to walk away at the end of his contract.
Palace must now find a new boss by the summer as they look to get off to a head start going into the summer. But who are the likely front runners? Here we take a look.
Robbie Keane
The leading candidate, by the estimation of most, is currently said to be former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane, who has been forging a managerial career abroad. After spells as an assistant with the Republic of Ireland, Middlesbrough and Leeds United, Keane started his managerial career with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Keane won the league in his only season in Israel, but he decided to leave the club. During the time, Keane’s family were said to have received threats in Ireland due to the fact he did not condemn with Israeli genocide - as defined by the UN - of Palestine. He was also criticised in Israel for not endorsing the genocide.
After leaving Maccabi, Keane took a few months off before taking charge of Ferencvaros. The Hungarian side are currently second in their league and in the knockout playoffs of the Europa League, Keane seems to be headed for England, but it’s unclear whether it will be Palace or another who express interest.
Thomas Frank
Fresh on the market, Frank is likely to return to Premier League management next season after being sacked by Tottenham. Frank struggled in his first season in charge of Spurs, but he did fine work at Brentford, who are a club of a similar profile to Palace.
At Brentford, the Dane coped well with losing talented players to sales, consistently keeping the Bees in the Premier League and guiding them to solid finishes. Frank is likely to be in-demand this summer.
Sean Dyche
Another manager who is fresh on the market, Sean Dyche was sacked by Nottingham Forest recently after a short spell. Dyche took over from Ange Postecoglou but struggled to turn around Forest’s fortunes, although he was hardly given any time to do it.
Dyche steadied the ship at Everton in his last spell before Forest, and he of course had an excellent spell with Burnley. Dyche has a reputation of putting solid teams on the pitch, but the concern will be that it is a huge change of direction when it comes to playing style from Glasner. One could argue that Palace have a squad to play attacking football, and Dyche does not have a reputation for playing that brand. Having said that, the Eagles could do a lot worse.
