Roberto Martinez shares what he still regrets when he looks back on his time as Everton manager

Roberto Martinez still has regrets over failing to manage the expectations after his 72-point season with Everton.

During the 2013/14 season, Everton ended the Premier League campaign in fifth place having secured 72 points.

That secured Europa League football for the Toffees, but Everton were only able to make it to the Round of 16 and follow up with an eleventh-placed finish in the Premier League.

In recent months, Martinez has admitted he thinks his Everton sacking was unfair given the heights he was able to take the Blues to.

Martinez was sacked almost 10 years ago from his role at Goodison Park, but he still holds the regret of the 2014/15 season with him.

Everton are pushing for an ambitious European finish this season, but many fans are concerned about whether their squad is capable of competing next season.

Seeing Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest fail to juggle all competitions will only emphasise the concerns.

“What I regret when I look back is I didn’t manage the expectations,” Martinez said on the Stick to Football podcast.

“So from the first season going to 72 points, the next season in Europe, at that time not many people remember, but in 2015, the British clubs, the Premier League clubs, were finding it very difficult to play in Europe because the physicality of the Premier League was taking a lot, and Everton was the latest team in European competition.”

“But then the season after, we made two semi-finals, Everton, in the League Cup and in the FA Cup, and it was those margins.”

Gerard Deulofeu believes Martinez lacked attacking experience in that Everton squad just to get it over the line in the cup games he has mentioned.

Fine margins can make a huge difference, but Everton did appoint four different managers over the following four years after sacking Martinez.
