‘Unprofessional’ – Aston Villa player’s refusal to attend meeting caused lingering issue

Aston Villa’s Matty Cash refused to meet former Poland manager Michał Probierz during the latter’s trip to England.

This didn’t impress Probierz, and therefore, he didn’t consider the right-back regularly during his time with the national team.

That’s according to journalist Piotr Wołosik, who reported this on Przegląd Sportowy’s YouTube channel. WP SportoweFakty have relayed his comments.

The 28-year-old arrived at Villa Park in September 2020, when Aston Villa signed him from Nottingham Forest.

He was born in England but represents Poland on the international stage. The right-back is of Polish descent through his mother, which made him eligible for the national side. He made his debut in November 2021 and has played 23 matches so far.

Probierz managed the national team between September 2023 and June 2025, replacing Fernando Santos.

Cash only played five matches under his orders.

Aston Villa player struggled under Probierz

Probierz had left the Aston Villa man out of his squad for Euro 2024. The fullback was clearly unhappy, also because he found out about his omission from the Polish press.

In March 2025, the former manager publicly dismissed suggestions of a conflict with Cash.

Fast forward to now and Wołosik reports Cash’s refusal to meet Probierz during his trip to England didn’t please the latter.

“Matty refused. He said that his family had gathered and he had responsibilities at home. And he refused to meet with the coach,” he said.

“It’s quite an interesting story. And that’s probably why coach Probierz was so, let’s say, stubborn, because he was treated a little frivolously and unprofessionally by our representative.”

Cash regains place in national team

Poland appointed Jan Urban as Probierz’s successor in July and this has clearly worked out well for Cash.

He has regained his place in the national team, and his performances have also improved under Urban. The defender scored a goal each in the World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands [1-1 draw] and Finland [3-1 win for Poland].

Cash is a regular under Unai Emery, playing 33 matches so far for Aston Villa this season.
