Fulham Agree Midfielder Deal – Injury Scuppers Early Appearance

Fulham midfielder Matt Dibley-Dias has joined Braintree Town on loan for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign, as he looks to reignite a career that has stalled through injury and limited opportunities.

The 22-year-old central midfielder spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Northampton Town but endured a difficult spell at Sixfields. He made just three appearances in all competitions, including two League One outings, before returning to Craven Cottage in January with an injury. A subsequent loan move to Chesterfield followed a similar pattern, with only four League Two appearances before that stint was also cut short.

Now, the New Zealand-born midfielder drops into the National League in search of consistent minutes with Braintree, who currently sit 21st in the table and are battling to preserve their fifth-tier status. He joined in time to be eligible for their fixture on Wednesday. Ironically, he missed a chance to make his debut as they lost 2-1 at home to Aldershot because he was injured. A tough start indeed.

Still highly regarded

Dibley-Dias remains a highly regarded talent at Fulham despite his setbacks. Born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, he moved to England at a young age and progressed through youth systems at West Ham United and Brentford before joining Fulham’s academy in 2016. He signed his first professional contract in September 2021 and later extended his deal through to 2027, underlining the faith placed in his long-term development.

During the 2022-23 season he was named Fulham’s Johnny Haynes Academy Player of the Year, recognition of strong performances at under-21 level. He has also appeared on the senior bench four times, including during the Premier League campaign, though he is still awaiting a first-team debut.

Internationally, he has been courted by New Zealand and was called up for friendly fixtures in 2023, only for a hamstring injury to deny him the chance to feature. Eligible for multiple nations through family heritage, his international future remains open.

Risk versus reward

For Braintree, the move represents a low-risk gamble on a technically gifted midfielder with pedigree and potential. For Dibley-Dias, it is another opportunity to prove that the promise shown in west London can yet translate into senior impact.

If he can finally string together a run of games, this loan could mark a turning point rather than another frustrating footnote. Whether that translates to a Fulham career remains to be seen, but the very leats he’ll be hoping for is enough football to impress an EFL club by the time his Cottagers’ contract ends.
