Newcastle United approve Bruno Guimaraes injury request as Brazil media double down on return…

Bruno Guimaraes injury: The Brazilian media have provided a further update on the Newcastle United captain’s recovery after meeting with Carlo Ancelotti.

Bruno Guimaraes is reportedly set to stay in Brazil and focus on his recovery from a hamstring injury rather than return to Newcastle United.

The midfielder suffered an injury in the closing stages of Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.

The injury is expected to keep him out until after the March international break, a date the Brazilian media have now doubled down on when providing a further update on the Newcastle captain’s recovery.

Bruno Guimaraes back in Brazil for injury recovery

Guimaraes had spent time with the Brazil national team’s medical staff at Atletico Mineiro. Instead of returning to Newcastle to continue his recovery, ESPN Brazil have reported that the 28-year-old will remain in his home country and continue his recovery with Botafogo.

The report adds: “He [Guimaraes] understands that dedicated treatment in Brazil would accelerate his return more than remaining in England and following Newcastle 's normal protocol.”

It comes after a meeting with Brazil national team coach Carlo Ancelotti in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. Guimaraes has already been ruled out of Brazil’s squad for the upcoming March international break as he focuses on getting fully up to speed for Newcastle and in time to go away with Brazil to the World Cup in North America this summer.

Guimaraes is expected to remain in Brazil for around a month but could end up being sidelined for over two months in total.

Eddie Howe explains Bruno Guimaraes injury decision

Guimaraes’ injury recovery in Brazil comes with the blessing of Newcastle, with head coach Eddie Howe saying earlier this month: “He spoke with our medical team, and we've been in consultation with the Brazilian national team, so he's going to do his first part of his rehab with the Brazilian national team and then he'll come back to us for the last four weeks.

“So I think it's a good mix for Bruno. Because in the initial stages he won't be able to do too much, he gets a sort of mental refresh, while doing some good work, and then comes back to finish off his final part of his rehab.”

The injury has already ruled Guimaraes out of Newcastle’s recent matches against Aston Villa, Manchester City and both legs of the Champions League tie against Qarabag. Guimaraes is set to miss The Magpies’ upcoming matches against Everton, Manchester United, Chelsea and Sunderland in the Premier League, Manchester City in the FA Cup as well as both legs of the Champions League last-16 tie against either Chelsea or Barcelona.

It is still unclear whether Guimaraes will be back in time for Newcastle’s match at Crystal Palace after the March international break.

ESPN Brazil added that the total recovery time for Guimaraes could last up to two and a half months, which would rule the midfielder out until the back end of April.

While Newcastle have been able to pick up wins in the cup competitions with Guimaraes, they are still yet to win a Premier League match he hasn’t been involved in since his arrival at the club from Lyon in January 2022.

Newcastle currently sit 11th in the Premier League table with 11 games left to play.
