Man Utd scouting Ajax’s Sean Steur as search for Dutch talent intensifies

Manchester United are stepping up their search for midfielders after beginning to monitor Ajax starlet Sean Steur.

After signing no players in January, Manchester United are set to be busy in the summer.

United have been linked with multiple midfielders after Casemiro announced that he will be leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season.

While many of the targets reported are playing in the Premier League, such as Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, United’s scouts are also looking further afield.

Sean Steur emerges as Man Utd transfer target

The Eredivisie is the home of many talented prospects, but it is worth noting that United have had mixed luck when shopping in the Dutch market.

Perhaps the biggest success in recent years – from a United perspective – has been Lisandro Martinez, after arriving from Ajax in 2022 along with Erik ten Hag.

The more disappointing deals include Andre Onana, Antony and Memphis Depay.

However, United have been linked with AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smith following comparisons to Frenkie de Jong.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has urged United to sign Smith in the summer, but there’s another midfield prospect in the Eredivisie who is attracting attention.

According to TEAMtalk, United are among several Premier League clubs watching Ajax starlet Sean Steur.

Steur has had fewer than a dozen senior starts, but United have sent scouts to Ajax matches to take a closer look at the midfielder.

Interest is believed to be surging across the Premier League, with Liverpool and Arsenal both tracking the 18-year-old.

It is also understood that Chelsea and Man City have been tracking Steur for longer than other clubs.

Steur is under contract until 2028, but it will be hard for Ajax to keep him if the biggest clubs in England are chasing his signature.

Man Utd need more than Sean Steur

It could be argued that United need more than one midfield addition in the summer.

Losing Casemiro would come as a blow to any team, even though he is coming to the end of his career. That shouldn’t come as a surprise because United are still relying on the Brazilian veteran to start every match.

United need to find a more experienced player than Steur to replace Casemiro, but it would be a good idea to add more talented midfielders to the squad to give Michael Carrick – or whoever is head coach next season – more quality options to select from.

Ineos need to find an elite holding midfielder who can hit the ground running in United’s first team. That explains why they are targeting players with Premier League experience.
