£25m Willy Gnonto replacement identified by Leeds United – it would be controversial

Leeds United

Some Leeds United players have found their place in the first team under threat since last season in the Championship. This summer saw the Whites bring in 10 new signings, which immediately brought competition for places.

Some new names came straight into the lineup, with the regulars from the Championship moving to the bench. Joel Piroe was out of the first team as soon as Dominic Calvert-Lewin was fit, and the performances from Lukas Nmecha have seen Piroe slide in the pecking order. Lucas Perri also came straight into the team as the new number one, but his poor performances have seen him relegated to the bench for Karl Darlow.

Others like Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruev have had the fight for their spot in the team when Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff arrived. As the season has gone on, one player who has slowly been sidelined is Wilfried Gnonto.

Leeds United eye summer transfer target

The winger was a spark plug off the bench in the Championship, making impact in his cameos. But as the season progressed he became a regular towards the end. Gnonto has found it difficult to get on the pitch this season, playing just 546 minutes in total. In that time he has still managed to be productive, with three goal contributions in six starts.

Per SportsBoom, Girona winger Yaser Asprilla has been highlighted as a major target for this summer, should Wilfried Gnonto leave Elland Road. Gnonto’s lack of playing time and interest from Italy could see the winger look for more opportunities at the end of the season. Asprilla is currently on loan at Galatasaray, and Leeds believe that he is very similar to Gnonto, and would fit his role perfectly.

Yaser Asprilla signing would be very problematic

A deal for the Colombian would be problematic on multiple fronts. First, the fact that he has played for Galatasaray and worn their colours would be a huge no from the fanbase. The two teams have a bitter history, and a former player making the switch could cause unwanted trouble. When it comes to the sporting aspect, Asprilla is just not a worthwhile signing.

The reports adds that he is valued around £25 million, which is more than the Whites spent on any player in the summer. Combine that to the fact that the youngster is not prolific, and has not shown any incredible performances, and the deal is a very bad one. If Gnonto does depart the club, there will be multiple names of the market that Leeds can look to, but Yaser Asprilla should not be an option.
