Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko left supporters astonished as he produced a remarkable sprint to finish off United's winning goal against Everton on Monday evening. The Slovenian shifted through the gears to record a top speed of 35.3 km/h - though his time doesn't even feature amongst the top five quickest Premier League players this season.
Sesko was trailing Toffees centre-half James Tarkowski as Matheus Cunha carved out space to deliver the ball wide towards Bryan Mbeumo. But the striker's eye-catching surge of pace created a one-on-one opportunity with Jordan Pickford as he collected the pass from Mbeumo before finishing.
Opta recorded Sesko's top speed as being faster than his previous quickest time: a dash in the Boxing Day victory over Newcastle United. Nevertheless, whilst the 22-year-old's lightning-quick impression appeared effortless against the Blues, the time registered isn't even United's quickest this campaign.
Mbeumo achieved a speed one kilometre-per-hour quicker than his colleague, during the away fixture at Fulham back in August. That remains the fastest a United player has travelled this season.
Sesko does occupy second and third position in the rankings, though, for his displays against Everton and Newcastle. Amad and Diogo Dalot also clocked runs that feature prominently.
Since Opta began recording speed data at the start of the 2020/21 season, Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven is the fastest player on record clocking a top speed of 37.38. This came in January 2024.
This season, however, has seen Wolves' Jackson Tchatchoua take the top two spots, according to the Premier League's official website.
