Casemiro is preparing for the next chapter of his career, and Europe remains firmly in his sights. The Brazilian midfielder will leave Man United when his contract expires in June, closing a significant chapter at Old Trafford.

At 34, he believes he still has the level and discipline to compete among the continent’s elite. Those close to him say retirement or a slower-paced destination does not appeal. Instead, he wants one more serious challenge before time forces a different decision.

Casemiro favours Europe despite strong MLS links

Casemiro has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer in recent months. He and his family have holidayed in Florida and travelled to Miami during United’s recent 13 day break between fixtures. His wife Ana was also seen in Las Vegas earlier this month, which fuelled talk of a possible American switch. However, the pull of European football remains stronger. Casemiro still owns a family home in Madrid, and Spain holds emotional value after his trophy laden spell with Real Madrid. Italy has also emerged as a realistic option.

Sources close to the player have indicated that Serie A appeals to him. The move of his former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric to AC Milan has not gone unnoticed. Modric turned 40 in September and signed a one year contract with the option of an extension. That example reinforces Casemiro’s belief that age does not automatically end careers at the highest level. He feels he can offer leadership, structure and experience to a side competing for major honours.

A steady presence in a shifting United midfield

Despite speculation around his future, Casemiro has remained heavily involved this season. He has started 24 of Manchester United’s 29 matches. Of the five he did not start, two came through suspension and one was a planned rest. He also contributed five goals, four of them from set pieces, underlining his continued threat in key moments.

Since returning to the starting line up at the beginning of the Europa League knockout phase last February, he has provided balance in midfield during a period of tactical reshuffling. As per reports, he wants to remain in a top European league and test himself at a competitive level rather than step away from elite football. That desire has shaped his thinking ahead of the summer window.

Man United explored potential exits in 2024, including interest from the Saudi Pro League. They also assessed options during the winter window last year. His reported £350000 weekly salary complicated negotiations and limited serious offers.

Well placed sources suggested Casemiro felt disappointed by comments made by co owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe last March, when he described certain senior players as part of the previous regime. While the relationship did not publicly fracture, the episode added tension during a season of transition at the club.

Legacy, Brazil ambitions and what comes next

Man United signed Casemiro from Real Madrid in a £70 million deal in August 2022. He quickly made an impact, scoring in the 2 0 League Cup final victory over Newcastle in 2023 and playing a central role in that triumph. He later found himself left out of the starting eleven for the 2024 FA Cup final win against Manchester City and withdrew from the matchday squad after arriving at Wembley. That decision highlighted the shifting hierarchy within the squad.

Beyond club commitments, Casemiro still has international ambitions. The upcoming World Cup could represent his final major tournament with Brazil. He was recalled last year by his former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, which restored his confidence on the international stage.

His experience in the Premier League and across European football remains valuable. The coming months will determine where that experience is deployed next, but one thing appears clear. Casemiro does not view this summer as the end. He sees it as another opportunity to compete where the stakes are highest.
