Rumours of a potential return to Manchester United for Scott McTominay this summer have been tempered by GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano.
GMS sources have revealed for months that United are set to make a move to sign two top midfielders during the summer transfer window, to bolster what is seen as one of the weakest areas of the pitch for them.
While Kobbie Mainoo is reborn following the departure of Ruben Amorim, and captain Bruno Fernandes continues to be the Red Devils' talisman, United have issues in terms of depth and quality in the middle of the park.
Casemiro is a regular starter right now under caretaker boss Michael Carrick, but the Brazilian has already announced that he will leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season, while Manuel Ugarte continues to find himself on the fringes of the starting XI under a second successive manager.
United Linked With Scott McTominay Return
Napoli's Scott McTominay warms up
There were a few raised eyebrows when McTominay was allowed to leave United for Napoli in a deal worth around £26m in the summer of 2024, having scored 10 goals in 43 appearances for the Red Devils in the 2023-24 campaign.
And those who doubted if the move was the right decision by United have been proved right, with the Scotland international named as Serie A's MVP in his debut season in Italy, as he proved instrumental in Napoli regaining the Scudetto.
United have been linked with a move to bring the 29-year-old back to the club ever since he started to show elite form in Italy, with recent reports even suggesting they've made a £70m bid for his services ahead of the summer.
That has been played down by Romano however, speaking in his latest YouTube video:
"On Scott McTominay, at the moment my understanding is that Napoli are in contact with Scott McTominay's camp to sign a new contract.
"So Napoli in the next month want to try and reach an agreement with Scott McTominay, and reward him with a better salary. We know McTominay has been fantastic at Napoli, especially in the first season, and this season, when he's been fit, he's always been great.
"For sure, he is one of the best players in Serie A, if not the best. And doing fantastic. But at the moment, Napoli are completely focused on this contract extension, and so I'm not aware of anything advanced with Man United. Man United have a list with several midfielders, but the decision will be made later on."
United Can Right McTominay Wrong This Summer

Given how much of a weak position the midfield has been for United in the last 18 months, there must be more than a bit of regret at the decision to let McTominay leave in 2024.
His form since then shows he would have been a key player for United in that position, and he is also someone who cares deeply about the club having come through the youth system.
McTominay's 23 goals in 70 games for Napoli from midfield, in addition to 10 assists, show what a key player he has been for them, and what he would bring to Old Trafford.
With United looking to bring in two top midfielders this summer, it's hard to imagine that fans would be too upset if McTominay was one of the names.
Convincing Napoli to cash in when they are trying to extend the Scot's contract could be difficult though.
