Andre Onana is currently on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor and is due to return in the summer.

Manchester United’s goalkeeper position has been in turmoil over the past few years, as they have struggled to find a reliable option ever since David De Gea left. Andre Onana was the first choice, but he really struggled last season, leading to an exit in the summer.

Onana joined Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan for the remainder of the season, but it is understood there is no chance his move will be made permanent, which means that he’s due to return to Man United ahead of next season.

However, the Red Devils now have a new number one in the form of Senne Lammens, whom they signed in the summer. So, what does that mean for Onana when he makes his Man United return?

Onana believes he’ll be given a chance at United

Onana has performed fairly well since joining Trabzonspor in the summer. He’s made 21 appearances for the Turkish side, conceding 32 goals, and keeping four clean sheets; He has been their first-choice keeper for the majority of the season.

However, Lammens has been excellent at United, and many believe that the Red Devils will look to sell Onana when he returns in the summer. But, despite that, Onana himself believes that he will be given a chance to fight for game time at United when he does return in the summer, which is according to a report by the Guardian.

He reportedly wants to return and fight to re-establish himself as the number one goalkeeper at Old Trafford, and believes that he will be given that chance, which goes against all the other reports we’ve heard on Man United’s stance on Onana.

His contract is due to expire in 2028, so United won’t be able to release him, leaving them with two options. They either re-integrate Onana into the squad or look to sell him on the cheap in the summer.

Lammens has been exceptional for Man United

Since becoming Man United’s first-choice keeper after he joined, Belgian stopper Lammens has really impressed with his calm demeanour, quick reflexes, and sensible distribution.

There really hasn’t been much talk about the Man United goalkeeper spot since he joined, which says all you need to know, considering how much talk there was during Onana’s time as the number one at Old Trafford.

After United’s 1-0 win against Everton at the weekend, manager Michael Carrick was full of praise for Lammens, suggesting that he was “immense” in the fixture over the weekend. Carrick said: “He made a couple of really good saves, he looked calm and composed in a tough environment.

"A lot of corners coming in under his crossbar, didn't get flustered, took some good chances and clean hands. He was immense for us tonight. I'm delighted with the result and spirit, the boys digging deep and sacrificing for each other. Results-wise, it's been good, but there is still much to come from us."
