Leeds United’s recruitment during the summer window has proven to be exemplary as Daniel Farke enjoys the impact of several post-promotion additions.
After clinching the Championship title, Leeds knew that anything other than a very good transfer window wouldn’t be enough to stay in the Premier League.
Nine months later and United’s position in the top flight survival battle underlines the work done by the 49ers and Daniel Farke in that regard.
Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin proves to be one of standout signings of the season
When Leeds constantly flirted with a big-money move for Rodrigo Muniz, it left a lot of fans – myself included – somewhat underwhelmed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the alternative.
Joining on a free transfer days before the season arrived, there were justified concerns that his fitness could prove a real issue. He’s not had many seasons where he’s stayed fit consistently. But, Leeds’ confidence when signing him was that these concerns are overblown, which has rang true thus far.
With just one goal in his first 10 league appearances, Calvert-Lewin has been transformed since our shift in approach at the end of November away to Manchester City.
Now in 24 league appearances, Calvert-Lewin has notched double figures with an assist on top. Remarkably, Calvert-Lewin’s two penalties are his two goals from the furthest distance away, showing his quality as a poacher on top of everything else he offers to the side.
West Ham chief outlines Dominic Calvert-Lewin regret with Leeds United laughing
Calvert-Lewin wasn’t short of interest during the summer. However, his drawn-out free transfer after leaving Everton likely came down to the 28-year-old ensuring he made the right move.
He could’ve joined Leeds’ relegation rivals West Ham, as it turns out. That’s according to an unnamed spokesman at the London Stadium, who outlines the Irons’ regret on not signing Calvert-Lewin.
“Yes we regret not signing Calvert-Lewin, especially on a free transfer,” a ‘senior spokesman for West Ham’s owners’ told Hammers News. “But Mr Potter didn’t want a forward and would not let us sign or buy one.
“Nuno came in and immediately identified that he wanted two and it has helped us massively.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin ‘risk’ has become an absolute revelation for Leeds United
The importance of a strong all-round number nine cannot be understated. That is on display any time Calvert-Lewin plays for Leeds.
He’s been so important to our success since that change in formation at half-time against Man City. The goals have flowed as a result.
You can understand why clubs like West Ham didn’t want to take the risk. However, we were willing to take that gamble on his perceived injury issues, and it’s paid off massively.
What is also worth noting is how we’re playing. I’m sure West Ham fans would agree that they weren’t likely to see the same impact we are. You only have to look at the extensive list of West Ham striker signings that have failed to see what I mean.
