How Man Utd now feel about potentially hiring Oliver Glasner ahead of Crystal Palace clash

Oliver Glasner was once considered among the finest head coaches to be on the market in 2026, but Manchester United’s reasons for sacking Ruben Amorim cast doubt over his eligibility.

Despite being a legend at Crystal Palace, Oliver Glasner has already announced his exit ahead of the summer, when his contract expires.

Prior to this, Glasner emerged as an early frontrunner to become the next permanent Manchester United manager this summer.

His stock in the Premier League has dropped considerably since then, with his team struggling. Now, Andy Mitten has shared an update on whether Glasner is still in contention.

Who do you think will be Man Utd manager at the start of the 2026/27 season?

What are Oliver Glasner’s chances of being the next Manchester United manager?

Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast this week, Mitten has explained how Glasner’s chances of getting the United job have sunk.

“I think if you’re expected to win games with 32% of possession like Glasner is or Thomas Frank at Brentford, it is extremely different from being Manchester United, apart from a Manchester United in the first two games under Michael Carrick against City and Arsenal.

“He was definitely respected, as was Thomas Frank, but absolutely not someone who I have heard in the conversation be a future Manchester United manager.”

Glasner’s system is like Ruben Amorim’s in that it is better suited to being the underdog, playing without the ball, and this alone should have been enough to rule the Austrian out.

However, Glasner hit an Amorim-esque low in January, and he seems to be an explosive character that Ineos has already proven they don’t want to work with those willing to call them out.

Ineos were also keen to depart from the 3-4-3 under Amorim, prior to his sacking, so appointing another manager with a similar style and system would simply not make sense.

Michael Carrick is becoming the sole standout option for Manchester United

One by one, United’s options to become the next permanent head coach are dropping away, leaving Michael Carrick as the sole standout option.

Glasner looks unlikely, Carlo Ancelotti is committed to Brazil, and Thomas Tuchel is set to stay with England until 2028. Meanwhile, other options are quite simply bigger risks than giving Carrick the chance permanently.

Carrick is now firmly our number one pick, because there is no mystery about him. He’s doing it right now and impressing in the role.

Only Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann can dislodge him at the moment, outside of an unknown manager. The job is Carrick’s to lose.

Glasner can reignite his argument this weekend against United

While Carrick might lead, and Glasner seems down and out, this weekend, United take on Palace at Old Trafford, and Glasner has the chance to impress in an audition of sorts.

If Glasner deploys a brilliant positive game plan, then United bosses may rethink the decision to write him off.

On the other hand, Carrick could end Glasner’s chances once and for all by beating the Eagles comfortably.
