'Surgery is possible' - Brighton confirm injury blow to star striker

Brighton and Hove Albion team news

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler admits Evan Ferguson may have to undergo surgery on his ankle injury.

Ferguson, 21, is currently on loan in Serie A with Roma but has not featured for the past seven matches.

The Ireland international flew back to Brighton last week to have the injury assessed and has now returned to to the Italian capital for a second opinion. A decision on whether to operate will then be made.

"Yeah, I had a chance to catch up with him," said Hurzeler toSussex World.

"At the moment he's back in Roma. So he had a first opinion regarding his ankle injury, now he gets a second opinion.

"Then we all have to make the right decisions. What is best for Evan, how to continue, how to proceed with this issue.

“Then we have to wait for the second opinion, then we will make the right decision.

“[Surgery] might be a possibility. Like I said, we have to wait for the second opinion.

"I can't say too much now, because we definitely have to wait. Hopefully it's not that bad, and he can get on the pitch as quick as possible."

‘We might see a different Evan Ferguson’

It's been a frustrating period for Ferguson as he was just starting to to show his best form for Roma. He currently has five goals in 22 outings for Gian Piero Gasperini's fourth placed team.

Hurzeler added: "I spoke to him and he said an interesting sentence. He said that he learned a lot, and I think that's the most important, that players who are on loan learn something, that they learn something in a new environment, in a new culture, a new style of play, that they learn how to fight, that they learn how to adapt to different circumstances. Therefore, I think that's important.

"The second thing is, before his injury he played a lot of minutes, so he had a really good phase at Roma, he scored some nice goals, he was part of the team, he was part of the starting XI, and I think that's also the second purpose of a loan.

"Therefore, when I spoke to him earlier he had a really good feeling, so now hopefully his injury is not that bad, and then he can recover quite fast, that he has some more game minutes and then in summer let's see what happens.

"But after this conversation I had with him, I feel quite positive and quite confident that we might see a different Evan Ferguson."
