Crystal Palace will get the chance to sign some new players when the summer window opens up for business

Lyon defender Ruben Kluivert has confirmed Crystal Palace wanted him in the January transfer window, as per Ouest-France. The Eagles were interested in a move for the player earlier this winter. However, nothing materialised in the end and he stayed put in France.

Oliver Glasner’s side are sat in 13th place in the Premier League table after 27 fixtures. They have 11 matches left to play before the end of the season. The South London outfit won 1-0 at home against Wolves last time out.

Crystal Palace wanted Lyon defender Ruben Kluivert

Crystal Palace could have identified Kluivert as a replacement for Marc Guehi, who left for Manchester City last month. The Dutchman joined Lyon in July last year on a long-term deal. He has since become a key player for the Ligue 1 outfit.

Kluivert, 24, is also capable of playing as a left-back as well as down the middle if needed. He has made 19 appearances in all competitions in this campaign, 11 of which have come in the league, and he has chipped in with two goals and two assists from the back. His contract expires in 2030 meaning his current club are under no pressure to sell him anytime soon and can wait for big money.

The Amsterdam-born man started his career in his native country with spells at FC Utrecht and FC Dordrecht. He then made the move to Lisbon with Casa Pia in 2024. He subsequently spent 12 months in Portugal before Lyon launched their move.

Ruben Kluivert has say on Crystal Palace interest

Kluivert has had his say on Crystal Palace’s interest, via Ouest-France: “It was confusing, because it was very late in the day. I’m happy to be here, 100% committed to this project in Lyon. We’re still in the Europa League and the Coupe de France, we have a lot of games to play with a really superb squad, and I’m convinced we can go far in all these competitions.

“For these reasons, I would say that the club did the right thing in keeping me. Personally, I can’t deny that the Premier League remains a dream. But if I had to choose, I prefer the way things turned out. The club made the right choice. I signed a five-year contract with Lyon, and I see myself staying for at least another two or three years. The fact that they wanted to keep me here was a relief.”
