Ex-Man Utd striker Edinson Cavani urged to retire after Boca Juniors struggles

Former Argentina and Boca Juniors star Oscar Ruggeri has advised former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani to retire after being booed by his own fans at the Jose Armando Stadium.

It’s been almost four years since Edinson Cavani left Manchester United.

After following in Diego Forlan’s footsteps as the second Uruguayan striker to play for United, he arrived as a 33-year-old on a free transfer and made 59 appearances over two years.

Cavani scored 19 goals and registered seven assists for United before leaving the club as a cult hero in 2022. There will always be a feeling of regret that ‘El Matador’ wasn’t signed earlier in his career.

Oscar Ruggeri believes Edinson Cavani should retire

At the age of 39, Cavani has yet to hang up his boots after signing for Boca Juniors in 2023 following a transfer from Valencia.

Cavani had his struggles with injuries at United, but they’ve also got in the way of him having a greater impact at Boca Juniors.

The former United striker has scored 28 goals and provided three assists in 81 matches since arriving at Boca.

However, there have been regular fitness issues, which have led to disgruntlement from Boca supporters.

During Boca’s scoreless draw with Racing Club over the weekend, Cavani was booed by his own fans after being substituted.

The reaction has led to former Boca Juniors, River Plate and Real Madrid star, Oscar Ruggeri, advising Cavani to retire.

“It’s a shame that this star is being insulted like that, given his immense career,” Ruggeri told AS.

“He has to stop playing. It’s tough, at 40 years old, to still be playing in our league today.

“In my opinion, he’s not making the decision because he wants to keep trying to turn things around and leave.”

When does Edinson Cavani’s contract expire?

In October 2024, Cavani signed a two-year extension at Boca.

There have been suggestions that the deal includes a termination clause if certain conditions aren’t met, but it remains to be seen if the Argentine outfit are ready to go down that route with just a few months left on his deal.

Cavani is under contract at Boca until December 31, 2026. It remains to be seen if he is planning to retire or take his career elsewhere.

There may even be an opportunity for Cavani to sign for a club in his homeland of Uruguay.
