Report: Why Everton think Thomas Tuchel keeps overlooking Jarrad Branthwaite for England

Everton fans have only seen Jarrad Branthwaite play one game for England so far despite his talent.

The Everton No.32 made his debut for the Three Lions under Gareth Southgate back in June 2024 during a 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jarrad Branthwaite has since struggled with injuries which often leave him unavailable for a recall to the England side, but The Athletic say Everton feel there is another reason for frequent snubs from Thomas Tuchel.

Would you make any changes to this team or is that the best XI possible? 🧐

Everton's best XI.

Everton think lack of big-game experience is counting against Jarrad Branthwaite

Those inside the Hill Dickinson Stadium feel that Tuchel is opting for other defenders due to Branthwaite’s lack of experience in big games and cup competitions.

Last season, the Toffees saw the likes of Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah picked ahead of the former Carlisle man, which The Athletic say caused some bemusement at Everton.

However, Burn started and scored in a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. Quansah also started, and played most of a UEFA Champions League Last 16 clash against PSG.

Everton seem to believe Tuchel is basing his decisions on players who feature in significant clashes like these, as they obviously mimic the style of international tournaments more than a standard league game.

How far has Jarrad Branthwaite gone in a cup competition with Everton?

Everton suffered an embarrassing 2-0 loss to Wolves in the third round of the Carabao Cup this season, and failed to make it past the first hurdle in the FA Cup as Sunderland knocked the Toffees out.

Since moving to Everton from Carlisle, Branthwaite has never actually progressed further in a cup competition than the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup in the 2023/24 campaign under Sean Dyche.

Competition Season Furthest Stage Final Opponent (Result)

EFL Cup 2023/24 Quarter-finals Fulham (1-1, L 6-7 on pens)

FA Cup 2023/24 Fourth Round Luton Town (L 1-2)

FA Cup 2024/25 Fourth Round Bournemouth (L 0-2)

EFL Cup 2024/25 Third Round Southampton (1-1, L 5-6 on pens)

EFL Cup 2025/26 Third Round Wolves (L 0-2)

FA Cup 2025/26 Third Round Sunderland (1-1, L 0-3 on pens)

Everton are also not in Europe, so it is hard to see how the 23-year-old will be able to gain any experience of playing in big games unless David Moyes can qualify for the UEFA Conference League this term.

There is also an argument for Moyes himself hurting Branthwaite’s international career.

The Glaswegian is persisting with the 6ft 5in colossus at left-back, even though the Englishman has already made it clear he would prefer to play in the centre of defence.

Should David Moyes play with a back three and wing-backs more regularly for Everton?

Above all, Branthwaite needs to shake off his fitness issues and get a run in the team in central defence, or else we can’t see his situation on the international scene changing any time soon.
