Man Utd have set money aside to pay for the sacking of Ruben Amorim and his staff last month.

Manchester United could end up paying Ruben Amorim and his staff a further £16 million after he was sacked from his role as head coach last month.

The Portuguese coach was dismissed from his duties following a 1-1 draw against Leeds, after he .went to war with the club in his post-match press conference. Amorim claimed he had not been given the backing or support in his position and that he did not feel like a 'manager', despite the fact his job title was actually that of 'head coach.'

United sources quickly insisted that Amorim was sacked due to a lack of 'progress or evolution' on the pitch and played down the suggestion of any internal power struggle with the club's board. Darren Fletcher took charge as caretaker boss, before Michael Carrick was appointed head coach until the end of the season.

How much United could still pay Amorim

Ruben Amorim still had a year-and-a-half remaining on his Manchester United contract when he was sacked at the start of January.

In a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission, United have disclosed that they could still pay Amorim and the five members of his backroom team who left with him roughly £16m. That figure is the very top-end amount he could receive, and various factors could reduce it, including whether he gets a job elsewhere in the meantime.

Amorim's sacking was the latest high cost pay-out made since Jim Ratcliffe became a co-owner of the club. Erik ten Hag and his backroom staff received £14.5m when he was sacked just months after being handed a new contract, while Dan Ashworth received £4.1m when he left after only five months as sporting director.

United's filing read: “On 5 January 2026, the club announced that Ruben Amorim left his role as men’s first team head coach with immediate effect, along with a number of members of his coaching team.

“A charge of £6.3 million for the write off of related intangible assets and a provision of £15.9 million, representing the maximum potential amount of future settlement payments, will be recognised in the statement of profit or (loss) during the second half of the year ending 30 June 2026.”
