Manchester United are reportedly preparing to sanction the sale of striker Joshua Zirkzee in the upcoming summer transfer window as part of a broader plan to free up funds to reinvest in their squad, according to Daily Mirror-linked transfer speculation.
Zirkzee arrived from Bologna in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth around £36.5 million, signing a long-term contract with high expectations after a prolific spell in Serie A. However, the striker has struggled to justify the fee on English soil — netting just nine goals in 67 appearances across all competitions and frequently finding himself behind other attacking options in the pecking order.
With the club now prioritising a summer of significant squad overhaul, Manchester United’s hierarchy are understood to be open to listening to offers for Zirkzee as they seek to bolster the midfield and forward ranks.
Reports suggest that moving on Zirkzee could unlock valuable transfer funds amid budget constraints and a desire to reshape the squad after a disappointing league campaign.
Why Zirkzee needs to leave
Zirkzee’s time at Old Trafford has failed to live up to early promise. Despite flashes of technical ability and occasional clever link-up play, he has struggled to secure consistent starts under successive managers, largely overshadowed by more productive attackers such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Limited game time has also been a genuine concern for the forward’s international prospects. Reports from earlier in the season suggested that the striker was growing frustrated with a lack of minutes and even considering a winter move to reignite his career.
Adding to the pressure is the fact that United have invested heavily elsewhere in attack — signings totalling over £120 million in forward options — yet Zirkzee has continued to struggle to make a decisive impression.
Will a move materialise?
Whether Zirkzee actually leaves this summer remains up in the air. While there is reported interest from Serie A outfits and other European clubs, it’s not yet clear if Manchester United will receive offers that match their valuation.
Moreover, optimism from some supporters — and praise from teammates such as Mbeumo — suggests that the Dutchman might still have the ability to turn his United career around if given sufficient trust and minutes on the pitch.
However, the prevailing sentiment among some analysts is that a fresh start could benefit all parties: Zirkzee could secure much-needed regular football elsewhere, and United could reinvest the funds into areas where they see a more immediate upgrade.
For now, though, his future at Old Trafford looks increasingly uncertain unless a convincing turnaround occurs next season.
