“He’s Definitely Been Discussed”–Journalist Claims Ex-Everton Boss Is Shock Man Utd Managerial Candidate

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez could make the shortlist to be the next Man Utd manager, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel, Jacobs said that the Spaniard has been mentioned as a potential candidate by the club’s hierarchy:

“Roberto Martinez is expected to leave Portugal, and Jose Mourinho might get that job. I don’t think the data, the style, the feedback will necessarily push Martinez right up there, but he’s definitely been discussed as they create this shortlist [of managers].”

Martinez has not managed a club side since he was sacked by Everton almost a decade ago. He was in charge of Belgium between 2016 and 2022 before taking the Portugal job at the beginning of 2023.

Man Utd are putting a shortlist together

As mentioned by Jacobs, the board, along with Director of Football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, are currently deciding on who should be interviewed.

It is believed that Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann and former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi will make the final list, although Martinez’s inclusion is not guaranteed.

Will Michael Carrick be in the mix?

The 44-year-old has been tasked with managing United’s remaining games this campaign as part of his responsibilities as interim manager.

After winning 6 of his first 7 matches in charge, it is inevitable that Carrick will come under consideration, but it is still unclear whether he will be a genuine contender to take on the role on a permanent basis.

If he continues to rack up victories between now and May, his stock will get higher and higher, and it will be up to the board to determine if he would be a better candidate than the likes of Nagelsmann or De Zerbi.
