Jacob Ramsey could be available for Newcastle United's home clash with Everton on Saturday with boss Eddie Howe hopeful he the midfielder overcome an injury to make the squad. Ramsey, a £43m summer signing from Aston Villa, is doubt for the Premier League clash after missing the midweek Champions League win over Qarabag with a hamstring issue.

Howe said on Friday: "We hope that he will train today - fingers crossed for tomorrow."

While Ramsay could return at St James’ Park, Newcastle will be without Lewis Miley, Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar and Emile Krafth.

That means three of the starting XI when Newcastle beat Everton 4-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium in November will not be available for Howe - including two of his midfield three that night.

The Magpies manager said of captain Guimaraes: "I have had some good contact with Bruno. He seems very positive with his injury and how he feels. He has done a lot of work.

"He is being well looked after as well. We hope that he can come back and give us a push at the back end of the season. We have to treat his injury carefully."

Howe also addressed speculation linking Newcastle winger and Everton academy graduate Anthony Gordon to Arsenal in the summer.

Speaking ahead of his club being drawn against Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League, Howe said: “I’m not sure there’s a lot I can do about that. I’ve not seen the story, so it’s news to me.

“But we’re mid-season, we’re in the middle of some of the biggest games of his career and who knows what’s going to happen internationally with him in the summer as well?

“He’s got not time to look left or right, he’s got to be fully focused on straight ahead and the next game and trying to be as good as he can be.”
