Manchester United are in the market for a young central defender this summer, likely to be Harry Maguire’s eventual successor. Matte Smets is now being considered a potential addition.

Belgian centre-back Matte Smets has been enjoying a standout campaign with Genk and as a result Manchester United are taking an interest.

The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the top young defenders in Belgium, and United won’t be alone in trying to get his signature.

There have been a long list of clubs interested.

Smets played the entire game, through extra time in a 3-3 draw, as it was considered that he was the target of the scouting trip for most clubs.

Interest in Smets comes after United have been keen on Abubacarr Sedi Kinteh, who is another young defensive talent.
