Andre Onana remains determined to fight for his place at Manchester United, despite seeing his replacement shine after he was sent out on loan. Onana is spending the 2025/26 season on loan with Trabzonspor, with Senne Lammens impressing as United's new No.1 goalkeeper.
Lammens arrived in a £18million move from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day in September and United then decided to send Onana on loan to Turkey. Trabzonspor do not have the option to sign the Cameroon international permanently, meaning Onana will return to his parent club this summer, where he has played 72 times.
He has made 20 appearances for the Turkish side, yet his performances may well be of little interest to United given Lammens' form. The Belgian has been an assured presence in between the posts, starting 21 consecutive games under Amorim, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick.
Lammens has kept five clean sheets for United so far and is part of an improving defence under Carrick. Altay Bayindir is the number two goalkeeper behind Lammens currently, with veteran Tom Heaton also part of the goalkeeping group.
Onana was signed for £44m from Inter Milan by his former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag three years ago and still has two years left on his United contract. His friend, former Cameroon and Chelsea star Geremi, says Onana still harbours hope of turning things around at United.
“Listen, I know Andre very well and during his time at United there were a lot of things that were not right," he told Telecom Asia. “It wasn’t just him. And believe me, with the arrival of Michael Carrick, things are looking good for everyone, including him.
“He is clearly talented and his gifts are rare. The next thing is for him to go back there and fight for his spot. Andre has always excelled when faced with a challenge. He thrives when he’s given a fair chance to prove himself.”

Onana's future will be decided in the summer, when major changes are coming at United. The club's hierarchy are looking for a long-term successor to Amorim, with Carrick among the options being considered.
If Carrick does get the role permanently, then Onana's hopes could be dashed, with the interim boss delighted by Lammens' form. "For me, as a goalkeeper, to be reliable, to be trustworthy. Instead of creating the chaos, you want them to take the chaos away and calm things down I think Senne is that," he said after his man of the match performance in the 1-0 win over Everton.
“He’s quite quiet at times and unassuming, but he’s got a real steel in this. To step in, it’s a big, big role for some. And others are talking there about coping and just being comfortable in the environment. Sometimes it takes time, sometimes not. But how he’s gone about it at the moment is that calmness, that composure. I think it does help those in front of him an awful lot.”
