David Moyes shares 'big risk' taken at Everton as TFG's summer priority made clear

Everton manager David Moyes has shared the risk he’s taking playing James Garner in defence in a clear message to The Friedkin Group to sign him a new full-back.

The January transfer market was seriously underwhelming for Everton, who ended the window with a number of areas still to improve.

Moyes admitted the Friedkins gave him their backing, with no excuses available for anything other than a productive summer window.

Since returning to Merseyside, Moyes has been unable to strengthen his options at right-back, which has seen Garner used to fill-in for the suspended Jake O’Brien.

Is it time for Everton to start thinking about a change? 👋

David Moyes highlights right-back transfer demand at Everton

Earlier in the year, Moyes admitted he’s been wanting a new right-back for 12 months ever since he returned to the club.

Speaking to the media from Finch Farm on Friday, the Scot highlighted the risk he’s taking by playing his best midfielder in defence.

Is James Garner actually better as a full-back or in midfield? 🤔

He's been exceptional just about all season for the Blues!

“It’s a big risk but sometimes you have to take these decisions,” said Moyes.

“We’ve been looking for a right back for about a year. Jake O’Brien has done a great job at right back.”

“He’s been excellent in midfield. He’s getting close to being of the level to play for his country, so hopefully he can keep that up and get selected.”

Garner has admitted he’s comfortable playing at full-back, but his performances in midfield will demand that returns to his natural spot.

With Thomas Tuchel keeping a close eye on the midfielder’s displays, hopefully, playing out of position will not hurt his chances of making the England squad.

Nathan Patterson’s Everton future looks bleak

Monday evening looked like the perfect opportunity for Nathan Patterson to return to the starting XI.

No O’Brien meant Patterson was the next right-back in the pecking order to step up for the game against United.

However, the natural full-back was overlooked for Garner.

Patterson had interest from Wolves and a number of European clubs in the January window, but Everton rejected late interest in the Scotland international.

Everton require a certain level of squad depth, but it is a damning indication of how Moyes views his compatriot given he still cannot get into the side with O’Brien suspended.
