Vivell wants him: Man Utd now eyeing low-cost move to sign 'remarkable' French star - report

Manchester United are interested in signing Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume this summer, according to reports.

The Old Trafford side have reportedly identified the 24-year-old as another option in their ongoing search for midfield reinforcements, as they look set to overhaul their options in the position.

United’s director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is believed to be a particular admirer of Agoume and rates the Frenchman for his ‘destroyer-type’ midfielder profile.

Agoume joined Sevilla from Inter Milan in the summer of 2024 and is under contract until the end of the 2027/28 season.

According to journalist Shaun Connolly, Manchester United view Agoume as a low-cost alternative to Premier League stars Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton.

It is expected that Agoume could cost in a similar region to Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, with Sevilla open to a sale for around €30m (£26m).

Agoume has been an important midfield operator for Sevilla for the past two seasons, making 74 appearances across all competitions and registering eight goal involvements.

The ‘remarkable’ 24-year-old was also part of the Inter Milan squad that lifted the 2023/24 Serie A title, although he made just one appearance during the trophy-winning campaign.

Agoume Seen as Casemiro Replacement?

United could potentially look to sign Agoume as a replacement for Brazilian veteran Casemiro, who has announced he will be departing Old Trafford at the end of his contract in June.

The 34-year-old is one of four United players whose deals are expiring at the end of the season, along with Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia and Tom Heaton.

While Malacia is also expected to be on the move, United are believed to be working towards a new deal for Maguire and the signs are ‘positive’ that the towering centre-back will extend his Old Trafford stay.

United are unbeaten in their six games under interim boss Michael Carrick and next host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Amid United’s reported interest in Agoume, we asked ChatGPT what qualities make the Frenchman a potential Red Devils target for the upcoming summer window:

Midfield control and tempo – Lucien Agoume is strong at dictating play from deep, helping switch tempo and retain possession under pressure.

Defensive coverage – His ball-winning ability and positioning add protection in front of the back line, giving Manchester United more balance in midfield.

Progressive passing – Comfortable progressing the ball forward, Agoume links defence to attack and supports transitions with intelligent distribution.
