Wolves 2-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa suffered a 2-0 reverse at midlands neighbours Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Joao Gomes’ strike off the underside of the crossbar from just inside the area put the hosts in control in the 61st minute at a rain-sodden Molineux.

Amadou Onana saw an effort cleared off the goal-line deep into injury time, before Wolves added a late second on the counter attack courtesy of substitute Rodrigo Gomes.

It ensured Wolves claimed the Premier League spoils and left Villa empty handed, winning only one of the club’s last nine trips to Wanderers.

Defeat also ended a five-match unbeaten run away from home, as Unai Emery’s side lost only their second match in 12 on the road in all competitions.

The Villans will now be looking to get back to winning ways against Chelsea on Wednesday.

Emery made three changes to his starting XI from last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United, Pau Torres, Lucas Digne and Jadon Sancho recalled for the short trip across the midlands.

And it was an unmarked Torres who came close to opening the scoring after just seven minutes as his close-range header from Douglas Luiz’s corner was deflected wide.

Toti sent an effort off target at the other end before Luiz’s volley from Matty Cash’s right-wing cross tested Jose Sa in the 17th minute.

Morgan Rogers forced the Wolves ‘keeper into action as Villa dominated play but were still probing in an attempt to create a clear-cut opening.

The hosts gained a foothold on the encounter as the first half wore on, yet it remained all square and evenly balanced at the interval.

Onana headed over from Luiz’s corner before Ross Barkley and Leon Bailey entered the fray prior to the hour.

But it was Wolves who opened the scoring in the 61st minute, Adam Armstrong laying off Jackson Tchatchoua’s cross into the path of Joao Gomes to strike into the net off the underside of the bar.

Manager Emery turned to Tammy Abraham and Ian Maatsen off the bench and the latter stung the palms of Sa from inside the area in the 77th minute.

Villa, having won three of their last four meetings with Wolves, pressed for a late leveller in a bid to get reward from the encounter and Onana saw his effort cleared off the line by Yerson Mosquera in added time.

And the hosts capitalised as the broke and Angel Gomes converted in the eighth minute of stoppage time to secure local bragging rights.
