Unai Emery admitted he was dreaming of winning the Premier League just a month ago but is now calling for unity after Aston Villa’s embarrassing defeat to Wolves.
Villa became only the second club to lose to Wolves in the league this season, after West Ham, with this marking one of the club’s worst results under the Spaniard.
Joao Gomes opened the scoring just after the hour mark before Rodrigo Gomes doubled Wolves’ lead in the final moments of second half added time.
Villa now face a crucial match against fellow Champions League hopefuls Chelsea on Wednesday night, with the opportunity to extend their buffer over the Blues, who travel to Arsenal on Sunday.
“I want to tell the supporters that we need their energy,” Emery said in his press post-match conference. “On Wednesday we need their help. We need to be together - coaches, players, supporters, everyone. The season is being fantastic.
"Our expectation at the beginning of the season, we were over this for the last three months. Maybe now we are a little worse than two months ago," he said.
"We are losing the opportunity to win the title in the Premier League, two months ago we were competing with Arsenal and Manchester City, you were asking me about it.
"Someone, even myself, may say 'maybe we can'. Some supporters, maybe they were dreaming it. Now we are not with the possibility to fight for the Premier League, some can feel frustrated, even myself because I have my dreams.
"In September I was worried and the objective was to stay in the Premier League. In December I was so happy and excited to get the top five position and achieve the Champions League.
"One month ago I was dreaming about maybe winning the Premier League. Now we are in the average to be in the top five.
"Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, they are trying to get to us, for them it is a priority to get into the Champions League."
