Joelinton
LEVERKUSEN, GERMANY – 10 DECEMBER, 2025: Joelinton, Ibrahim Maza – UEFA Champions League, match Bayer 04 Leverkusen vs Newcastle United at BayArena.
Newcastle United now know they will face Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 – and Joelinton has already admitted that a trip to the Camp Nou was on his mind.
A week before the second leg against Qarabag, TNT Sports Brazil shared comments from the Brazilian midfielder following the 6-1 first leg win on 18 February.
Speaking to local journalist Fred Caldeira, Joelinton kept his feet on the ground. However, he did not hide a certain curiosity about a potential draw.
“No, first we have to win the game on Tuesday, right? I think we got a great result there, which was important. Now we have to try to have a great game in the second leg, at home, with our fans, and go through to the next round, because that is our objective.”
Newcastle did exactly that. They confirmed qualification and then saw their name paired with Barcelona.
Camp Nou appeal clear
Joelinton was also asked about a preference between Chelsea and Barcelona. He admitted it was difficult to choose, given the level of both sides. Still, one detail stood out.
“It is hard to choose. Two very strong teams. But I think it would be nice to play at Camp Nou. I have never played there, so it would be interesting.”
That wish has now been granted. And for Newcastle, this tie represents a major test of their European credentials. Barcelona bring pedigree and experience. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s side continue to build their own continental identity.
Big stage moment for Joelinton
For Joelinton personally, the fixture carries extra weight. He recently returned from an adductor injury and scored against Qarabag in the second leg. In addition, he has spoken openly about his post-recovery mindset and his World Cup ambitions with Brazil.
Performing well against Barcelona would strengthen both Newcastle’s European campaign and his international case. High-profile nights often shape narratives.
Newcastle supporters will focus on the collective challenge ahead. However, for Joelinton, the chance to step out at Camp Nou for the first time is clearly something he has been waiting for.
