Man Utd could achieve rare win-double not managed since Jose Mourinho in 2017/18

It has been almost eight years since Manchester United completed a Premier League double over Crystal Palace.

Manchester United are enjoying their best run of form this season since Michael Carrick returned as head coach in January.

Not only are United unbeaten, but the run includes five wins and one draw. It means Champions League qualification is within reach with 11 games remaining in the Premier League.

United beat Everton 1-0 last time out, so Carrick will be demanding his players make it back-to-back wins against Crystal Palace on Sunday. That would lift the team into third place above Aston Villa.

Man Utd seek first double over Crystal Palace in eight years

Crystal Palace have been a bogey team for United of late, considering it’s been so long since the Red Devils managed a league double over the Eagles.

United came from behind to beat Palace 2-1 in November, thanks to second-half goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount.

Oliver Glasner’s side were in much better form at the time, sitting in the top half of the table, but a lot has changed since then.

For instance, United are in the top four now and could move into third. That shows how much of an improvement Carrick has made since succeeding Ruben Amorim.

The next test for United and Carrick is beating Palace. It would mark United’s first league double over the south London outfit since the 2017/18 season when Jose Mourinho was in charge.

Palace have taken points from some of the teams that surround United in the table, including Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Carrick must ensure the players don’t underestimate Palace because a win would enhance our chances of finishing the season strongly.

How Jose Mourinho did the double over Crystal Palace

The last time United did the double over Palace, the first meeting took place in September 2017 and ended 4-0 at Old Trafford.

It was a sumptuous attacking display as United won 4-0 for the fourth time in seven league matches.

Juan Mata opened the scoring after three minutes before Marouane Fellaini completed a brace and Romelu Lukaku sealed the win with a fourth.

In March 2018, United travelled to Selhurst Park and won 3-2 after trailing 2-0. The comeback was achieved after goals were scored by Chris Smalling, Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.
