Sunderland forward heading for imminent exit – Agreement reached

Sunderland

Sunderland are set to part ways with Ian Poveda after the winger reached an agreement to join Colombian side Inter Bogotá, according to local journalist Pipe Sierra.

The 26-year-old has agreed terms with the Colombian side following what is described as a strong push from the club’s hierarchy. As a result, Poveda is now expected to leave the Stadium of Light and return to football in Colombia.

Several Colombian clubs were interested in the wide player. However, Inter Bogotá moved quickest and secured the agreement. So far, there are no details about a transfer fee or whether this will be a permanent move.

Frozen out despite Sunderland contract until 2027

This development follows a difficult period for Poveda at Sunderland. Back in December, we covered a Colombian reportclaiming that he had made his first appearance in 112 days, playing 45 minutes against Norwich City.

Crucially, the outlet made clear that his long absence was not due to injury. Instead, head coach Régis Le Bris had left him out of his senior plans.

The story at the time added that Sunderland could “look to move him on” in January, but there was no mention of concrete interest. Nevertheless, the direction of travel was obvious.

Poveda’s contract at the Stadium of Light runs until 2027. Even so, his future has appeared uncertain for months. Being excluded from Le Bris’ project made a departure increasingly likely.

Clean break for all parties?

Now, with an agreement reportedly in place, that exit seems imminent. From Sunderland’s perspective, this would represent a logical outcome after sidelining the player.

For Poveda, the move could offer a reset. Regular minutes were hard to come by in the Premier League. In Colombia, he may find the continuity he has lacked.

What remains unclear is the structure of the deal. If Sunderland secure a permanent transfer, they close the file entirely. If it is a loan, they may still hope to protect some value.

Either way, this looks like the conclusion of a chapter that has been drifting for some time at the Stadium of Light. Titles can follow once approved.
