Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel will be unable to make his first team bow this campaign owing to Premier League regulations. Circumstances might have differed had the club not endured an early FA Cup exit, but for now, the waiting game continues. In order to be eligible for first team registration in the Premier League this term, a player needs to have been born before August 31, 2010. Gabriel fell short by mere weeks, with his birthday in early October.
The regulations differ for the cup, however, where such age limitations don't exist. Gabriel's inability to feature in that tournament stems from United's third round elimination, with caretaker boss Darren Fletcher presiding over a loss to Brighton. Had they progressed in the competition under new interim manager Michael Carrick, an opening may well have emerged for Gabriel. According to GiveMeSport, Carrick would have contemplated deploying the youngster in subsequent rounds to afford him an initial experience of senior football.
Gabriel has previously participated in first team training sessions under both Carrick and United's previous permanent manager Ruben Amorim. Both have demonstrated willingness to grant opportunities to academy prospects in league fixtures already, with Amorim awarding multiple substitute outings to Jack Fletcher and Carrick handing a debut to the midfielder's twin brother Tyler.
Carrick has kept an eye Gabriel and his Under-18 teammates, watching them beat Oxford United in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup. 15-year-old Gabriel became the club's youngest ever goalscorer in the tournament when he struck the decisive goal against Peterborough in the third round, and also found the net during a 4-1 win at the Kassam Stadium.

Prior to that Oxford fixture, he had already reached double figures for goals in the Under-18 Premier League. Notable performances include two hat-tricks, one of which helped United beat Liverpool 7-0.
United's senior side remain undefeated across six matches under Carrick's stewardship. Their last loss came in that cup encounter against Brighton during January, when former player Danny Welbeck netted for the Seagulls in a 2-1 victory.
Another academy prospect received playing time in that fixture, with Shea Lacey introduced from the bench. The 18 year old's afternoon ended prematurely, however, after he was shown a second yellow card late on.
"He's disappointed because he cares and he understands and he knows he will learn from it," caretaker manager Fletcher commented following the match. "There is no doubt about his talent and it was a steep learning curve today but we believe in Shea. He's one of our most exciting young prospects and I'm sure at Old Trafford he will have a chance to make amends for that in the future."
