Luis Enrique has been tipped to return to Barcelona amid rumours linking him with the manager’s job at Manchester United. The Red Devils have already been linked with a host of potential candidates who could take the job at Old Trafford on a permanent basis.

Michael Carrick was named as United head coach on an interim basis until the end of the season last month, and has enjoyed an impressive spell in charge so far, going unbeaten while winning five of his six matches in the dugout.

Enrique, current manager of Paris Saint-Germain, has been linked with potentially taking charge of United in the summer, with several other names also mentioned as potential options.

A report on Catalunya Radio has claimed, though, that Barcelona could consider Enrique as an option to be their next manager. This is despite Hansi Flick guiding the club to the La Liga title last season, while they sit one point ahead of bitter rivals Real Madrid this term.

Barcelona’s presidential election will take place next month. It has been claimed Enrique’s name is on the list of several presidential candidates for the manager’s job in the future, and could be put forward for the role depending on which candidate is elected.

Current Barca president Joan Laporta is said to prefer keeping Flick as the current manager, but that could change if a new president is elected.

This could be a potential blow for United if the rumours are true that Enrique is a potential option to get the job at Old Trafford on a permanent basis.

Carrick could also be a candidate to get the job full-time if he continues his impressive run of form until the end of the season, as well as clinch qualification for the Champions League.

The possibility of United appointing Enrique has already been debated, with former Chelsea coach Jody Morris believing that keeping Carrick would be a better choice.

"Carrick has been unbelievable," Morris stated on the latest episode of In The Mixer earlier this week. "I was moaning about Ruben Amorim. I just couldn't have what he was doing. How can you not play Kobbie Mainoo?

"I have a lot of time for Michael Carrick. He was on my Pro Licence course and I've been on a few League Managers' Association things with him.

"He's an astute student of the game. Straight away, he comes in and Kobbie Mainoo's in there and he's been brilliant. It would be criminal not to give him the job if he carries on.

"I'm always up for young English coaches getting the job. And I think he's done an outstanding job so far. The fans are loving him as well. There's a real feel-good factor around Man United which hasn't been there for a long time."

Morris added: "I'd still go with Carrick, because I honestly don't think Luis Enrique would come to Man United."

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott was in agreement with Morris. He said: "I don't know if Enrique goes there now because I don't think he sees them as genuine contenders.

"I think Carrick should get the job because I don't know if Enrique helps them to become contenders. I think Carrick definitely does that. I think he has a stronger connection to the club, the fans, everything to help them get to that stage."
