Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has stepped down from his position on the board of Rangers, having held the role of vice chairman at the Scottish giants.

Marathe has held the position since 49ers Enterprises joined with Andrew Cavenagh in the acquisition of the club, with the Leeds supremo joined at Rangers by fellow Whites director Gene Schneur, who has also had to vacate his role on the board of the Scottish Premiership team.

The moves come after talks with UEFA over multi-club ownership regulations and an impending deadline of this weekend which could potential have caused an issue next season and beyond. It is understood the move is a way of protecting Rangers and Leeds should they be drawn in the same European competition in the future, to avoid one being kicked out of that competition, as happened to Crystal Palace this season.

Palace were not allowed to enter the same competition as Lyon, with John Textor owning shares in both clubs at the time.

UEFA's new multi-club ownership rules mean if two clubs with the same investors qualify for the same European competition, and they are adjudged to be in breach of said rules, one club will lose their place. While Leeds are fighting to stay in the Premier League, they do remain in the FA Cup and have a path into Europe next season as things currently stand.

The new deadline for ownership submissions and assessment is March 1, prompting this move, which has no implications for the actual ownership at Leeds or Rangers.
