Ethan Ampadu says the end of one particular sentence perfectly sums up Leeds United’s position.
Whites captain Ethan Ampadu has highlighted a prime example of Leeds United’s progress with a declaration about Saturday evening’s visit of Manchester City.
Leeds will line-up against Pep Guardiola’s title-chasers one week on from last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at third-placed Aston Villa in which the Whites looked destined to leave with a brilliant three points.
Anton Stach’s superb first-half free-kick had Daniel Farke’s men 1-0 up heading into the closing stages at Villa Park only for Tammy Abraham to scramble home an 88th-minute equaliser which snatched a 1-1 draw for the hosts.
The draw still kept Leeds six points clear of the dropzone but Ampadu admitted his men were left disappointed at not leaving Villa with a victory - itself showing just how far the team have come against a side the skipper feels not many sides will get points at.
The captain has declared that his men now face arguably their toughest test yet at home to City - but one which the skipper vowed his men are relishing under the Elland Road lights.
“That last sentence alone shows how far we have come”
Writing in his captain’s column of Saturday’s match night programme, Ampadu declared: “After the positive endings in the previous three matches, we were disappointed we couldn’t see out the win against Aston Villa.
“That last sentence alone shows how far we have come as collective over the course of the season - going away to a title contender and feeling deflated at not winning.
“Reflecting now, it’s another really big point for us at a place now many teams pick points up and certainly not to be sniffed at.”
Ampadu added: “Tonight we face arguably our toughest test of all against Manchester City at Elland Road.
“As players, these are the games we all want to play in, against the very best.
“We know there will be a top atmosphere as there always is under the lights and we can’t wait to get onto the pitch.”
