Arne Slot's genius decision as Liverpool become 'corner kings' against West Ham

Liverpool turned themselves into the corner kings as they blew away relegation-threatened West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

Arne Slot's side had been accused of being poor from set-pieces throughout the season - but the stats tell a different story. The Reds are the best of the rest behind Arsenal, something Slot has clearly been working on at the training ground.

Since New Year's Day no team has scored more set pieces than Liverpool - excluding penalties - with the Reds now notching seven, one more than table-toppers Arsenal. All three of their first-half goals came from corners on Saturday afternoon.

Hugo Ekitike got the goal fest underway in the opening five minutes when he found the back of the net for the first time in almost two months.

Dominik Szoboszlai's delivery was cleared to the edge of the box, where Ryan Gravenberch did well to keep this attack alive, spreading the play to the Frenchman who could finish.

Away from set-pieces West Ham were giving as good as they got - but Liverpool would find the back of the net from two more corners - this time through Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister.

The Reds were in cruise control at half-time, but their iron grip on the game was starting to slip when they came out of the break sleepwalking - allowing Tomas Soucek to offer the Hammers a route back into the game.

Ekitike found the net for his brace to reestablish Slot's side's two goal lead - but they were soon pegged back after some more poor defending.

Set-pieces were proving to be the difference on the day as Liverpool bid to keep their Champions League dreams alive.

The Reds have now moved into the top five, which should be enough for a place at European football's top table. However, Chelsea could leapfrog them if they beat Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Slot's side are also level on points with Manchester United, who are also back in action on Sunday afternoon against Crystal Palace.

Liverpool, however, are finally looking at an upturn in form after three wins in their last five.
