Shambolic defending handed Everton three points at St James' Park and leaves Newcastle United's bid for Europe in crisis.

With 20 minutes gone, after Dan Burn conceded a corner, James Garner curled in the set-piece from the left-hand with Jarrad Branthwaite luring Sandro Tonali across the six-yard box before a flicked header clipped the post and handed Everton the lead.

Newcastle then conjured up an equaliser on 32 minutes after Sandro Tonali's pass across the face of the box fell for Jacob Ramsey who sent a deflected effort past Pickford.

But Everton regained the lead two minutes later as Dwight McNeil's long range effort was fumbled by Nick Pope and Beto tapped home the rebound. The second half started in bizarre circumstances as Jacob Ramsey was hooked after vomiting on the pitch and being ordered off by the club doctor.

The second half was full of thrills and spills as Jacob Murphy swept home a second Newcastle equaliser before sub Thierno Barry instantly reacted to put Everton back ahead.

Here's how United fared against Everton:

Nick Pope 3

Never really recovered from the blooper that allowed Beto to score. It set the tone for a nervous display for Newcastle.

Kieran Trippier 6

Worked hard to probe Everton before running out of steam. Replaced for the last 15 minutes.

Malick Thiaw 4

Left standing too many times. Easily shrugged off by Beto in a horror moment in the second half.

Dan Burn 4

Vacated position for first Everton goal as Branthwaite flicked into open space. Picked up a yellow card on an afternoon in which he struggled.

Lewis Hall 7

A hand in the second equaliser and notched up over 100 touches.

Jacob Ramsey 7

A steady shift after scoring the equaliser, but was bizarrely taken off as the second half was kicking off, feeling sick.

Sandro Tonali 8

Allowed Branthwaite to get free and score opener but recovered well with an assist and kept Newcastle ticking over. Almost equalised with rasping effort that Pickford tipped on to the bar. Carried his team.

Nick Woltemade 4

No impact in either midfield or attack. Managed just 14 touches and no shots in total.

Joelinton 7

Battled hard and helped set up the second equaliser.

Anthony Elanga 4

No surprise his number came up. Didn't manage a shot or an accurate cross.

Anthony Gordon 6

Didn't score but was a real thorn in Everton's side. Boos followed his withdrawal.
