A screen at Elland Road explained the break in play during Leeds United vs Manchester City

Manchester 's fixture at Leeds United was momentarily paused on Saturday to allow players to break their fast during Ramadan. The score was 0-0 when referee Peter Bankes halted play in the 13th minute .

The break in West Yorkshire was short with play getting back underway moments later. Some supporters were heard booing during the delay.

"As tonight's match takes place during the holy period of Ramadan play has been paused briefly to allow players to break their fast," a message on the big screen at Elland Road read.

In 2021, arrangements were put in place to allow Muslim footballers to break their Ramadan fast during fixtures after sunset.

A year later, the German Bundesliga adopted the same strategy. Football clubs have also been adjusting their training timetables to accommodate Muslim stars observing Ramadan. Former manager Jurgen Klopp did so during his time at Anfield.
