Anthony Gordon's 2024 comments have aged terribly after Everton beat Newcastle

Everton produced a brilliant away performance against Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon and took all three points back to Merseyside.

David Moyes’ side secured a late winner through Thierno Barry, who came off the bench to score the third goal in the 3-2 victory.

Everton have moved onto 40 points, four points clear of Newcastle, who have now lost five of their last six Premier League games.

The Magpies are languishing in 12th place, and that now makes Anthony Gordon’s 2024 look truly ridiculous.

Following his Everton exit, Gordon said: “I’m too ambitious to turn down the opportunity that was presented to me.

“Newcastle are only going one way and looking from the outside, they were absolutely flying.

“I think they were fourth when I was just signing, so it was a no-brainer. My ambition is to be at the very top of football, whatever that looks like, and I couldn’t do that where I was.”

Everton are now the club on the rise under the Friedkin Group

The tables have turned pretty quickly since Gordon’s comments, as Everton are now the club on the rise under new ownership.

The Friedkin Group have transformed the Toffees from a team fighting relegation to a team challenging for Europe.

Moyes has constantly said Europe is the aim this season, and they are certainly well-placed to achieve that goal.

Only three points separate Everton from Brentford in seventh place, and even Chelsea are only five points ahead of them.

Meanwhile, Gordon’s Newcastle are on a downward spiral in the league, and they could drop as low as 14th after this weekend’s results.

Admittedly, they’re still in the Champions League, and Gordon has been performing well in that competition.

But, as it stands, they won’t be in any European competition next season, so Everton could have the last laugh.
