Leeds United were unable to match the quality of Manchester City as Daniel Farke’s side slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Elland Road on Saturday night.
The Whites competed well for large periods and showed defensive resilience throughout, but a decisive moment just before half-time ultimately proved costly. Rayan Ait-Nouri found space down the flank and delivered a pinpoint cross for Antoine Semenyo, whose close-range finish separated the sides heading into the break.
City largely controlled possession after half-time without significantly extending their lead, while Leeds pushed late on in search of an equaliser. Despite a spirited final spell and pressure from the home crowd, Farke’s men were unable to find an equaliser as their unbeaten home momentum came to an end.
Karl Darlow - 8
A dependable showing between the posts. Darlow produced a solid stop to deny Nico O’Reilly in the first half and handled most efforts comfortably.
His goalkeeping nous was key when scooping away a dangerous Marc Guehi header that looked destined for the net. Could do little about the winning goal.
Jayden Bogle - 7
Competitive throughout and strong in his individual duels. Bogle was effective when stepping forward early on but was forced into a more reserved role after the interval as City dominated possession.
Defended diligently under sustained pressure.
James Justin - 7
An industrious display from the full-back, who showed intelligence in possession and played a couple of clever forward passes.
The 28-year-old tested Gianluigi Donnarumma with a well-struck effort and worked tirelessly defensively, though he appeared hampered late on after picking up a painful knock.
Joe Rodon - 7
Rodon started well, reading danger and cutting out several passes into the box.
Will be disappointed not to have prevented the cross that led to Semenyo’s goal but responded positively thereafter with committed defending and strong positioning.
Pascal Struijk - 8
One of Leeds’ standout performers on the night. Faced a difficult challenge against City’s mobile attack but handled himself impressively, using his physicality to win key battles and maintaining strong positional discipline throughout.
Gabriel Gudmundsson - 7
The left-back proved to be one of Leeds’ main attacking outlets, progressing the ball well down the left and drawing fouls in dangerous areas.
Continued to push forward during the late surge for an equaliser while remaining composed defensively.
Ethan Ampadu - 6
A mixed evening for the stalwart midfielder. Nearly gifted City an own goal with an awkward header back towards Darlow and at times struggled physically in midfield duels.
Improved as the game wore on and helped drive Leeds’ late push.
Ilia Gruev - 5
Battled hard early, including a physical tussle with Rodri, but endured a difficult night overall.
A misplaced pass sparked a dangerous City attack and he struggled to impose himself as the visitors took control in the second half.
Anton Stach - 7
The summer signing showed flashes of quality with neat touches and forward-thinking distribution.
Stach was praised from the touchline for his ball recoveries, although he was caught out defensively in the build-up to the opener. Offered energy and intent on the counter.
Brenden Aaronson - 6
Bright during the first half, finding pockets of space and going close with a sliding effort. Continued to press relentlessly but found himself increasingly crowded out after the break and was eventually withdrawn.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin - 6
A frustrating outing for the striker. The former Evertonian missed a glorious early opportunity that could have changed the complexion of the game, though his movement continued to trouble City’s defence.
Linked play reasonably well but lacked the decisive moment.
Substitutes
Lukas Nmecha - 6
Helped Leeds maintain attacking momentum after coming on, linking play and keeping moves alive during the closing stages, albeit without sustained impact.
Daniel James - 6.5
Injected pace and urgency down the flank. Initially lost possession in a promising move but soon delivered a dangerous cross that forced City into a desperate clearance.
Wilfried Gnonto - 6.5
A shaky first touch aside, Gnonto quickly settled and combined well with Gudmundsson to win a valuable corner. Added energy and directness in the final third.
Jaka Bijol - N/A
The 27-year-old was introduced late and almost made an instant impact, going close with a header moments after entering the pitch.
Joel Piroe - N/A
Came on in the closing minutes as Leeds chased the game but had little time to influence proceedings.
