McGhee hails Bloom's Scottish impact but warns of Celtic and Rangers response

But he has doubts over whether the Albion chairman’s involvement can take Hearts to the title this season.

The race for the Scottish Premier crown might become a bit clearer this afternoon after Rangers have played Celtic at Ibrox.

But, in reality, we are some way from knowing who will end up on top.

Hearts, in whom Albion chairman Bloom has taken an investment of almost 30%, went seven points clear of Rangers with their 1-0 win at home to Aberdeen.

Celtic were two points further back but with a game in hand on both the sides above them.

Ex-Albion boss McGhee has expressed doubts over whether Hearts can stay top in his homeland.

But he appreciates the difference Bloom has made.

McGhee, the former Aberdeen, Celtic and Scotland striker, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Dundee boss and Scotland assistant manager, told The Argus: “I think there are two things with Tony.

“There’s the immediate impact he has had on Hearts, and their performance, and how they are doing it now, changing the way they work there.

“But I think in terms of Scottish football, people are very aware of the stories around Brighton and how he works and this scientific way he has of working.

“They are impressed that he is interested in Scottish football.

“I think Tony's involvement at Hearts has been a bit of a lift for everybody in Scottish football.”

McGhee was speaking at the launch of celebrations to mark Albion’s 125th anniversary.

That was before a weekend which saw Hearts increase their lead as both Glasgow giants dropped points.

But he was unsure as to whether the Tynecastle outfit would last the pace.

He said: “I always felt a few weeks ago that Hearts would come under pressure and they have from both from Celtic and Rangers.

“My brother said to me a few months ago that he thought Rangers were in it and I told him he was insane.

“And I've had to phone him back and apologise and say, ‘Actually, you might not be far wrong’.

“So I think it will in the end be between Celtic and Rangers. Hearts will run them close.

“Celtic need to get something going. Martin (O’Neill) gives them the best chance to do that.”
