Granit Xhaka and Bertrand Traore injury news ahead of Sunderland's trip to Leeds

Traore has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury while on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations with Burkina Faso.

The winger replaced Chemsdine Talbi in the second half of yesterday’s 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium, and while that was the maximum exertion Sunderland’s medical staff thought he was capable of, he should be in a stronger position by the time the Black Cats head to Elland Road in two days’ time.

“We will see how Bertrand is for Tuesday,” said Le Bris. “We will need Bertrand in the rest of the season because of the level that he is able to produce.

“He has already shown his maturity this season, and the way that he can manage that position on the right side. In this league, we need the kind of maturity that Bertrand can give us.

“That’s why getting him back, along with Granit [Xhaka] is really important. But in terms of what level he will be at for Tuesday, let’s wait and see.”

Xhaka was caught by a reckless second-half challenge from Tyler Adams that could easily have earned the Bournemouth midfielder a straight red card, and the Sunderland skipper was taken off with 14 minutes remaining.

His departure, with Nilson Angulo coming on in his place, was a planned move however, and not a response to the whack he took on the ankle.

“Granit came off because we wanted to manage his workload,” said Le Bris. “There wasn’t a problem. It was planned before the game. We have to progress gradually, and that was part of the plan.”

In the absence of the injured Brian Brobbey, Le Bris had to decide whether to name Eliezer Mayenda or Wilson Isidor as his centre-forward at the Vitality Stadium.

He went with Mayenda, and the Spaniard justified the faith that was shown in him, capping a fine display in which he held the ball up effectively with Sunderland’s 18th-minute opener that saw him volley home the rebound after Habib Diarra’s shot was parried into his path.

“They [Mayenda and Isidor] have two different profiles,” said Le Bris. “Today, the profile of Eli was better suited to this game.

“He did well. He defended from the front with the rest of the team and had good, strong body language to show that he was giving everything for us.

“He did well in the duels, and he got in behind when it was needed. He sniffed the opportunity to score, which is really important for a striker.”
