The 35-year-old remained an unused substitute during yesterday’s 4-3 defeat to Brentford, having been dropped to the bench.

The only other time Walker has missed out was when he was suspended for the Fulham game back in December, following an accumulation of yellow cards.

But having been hauled off at half-time against Chelsea last week following an error-strewn display, the former Manchester City man was forced to watch on from the dugout as Scott Parker’s side suffered a last-gasp defeat to the Bees.

The Clarets boss revealed the England international, whose form has been mixed of late, had missed parts of training this week – but Parker also confirmed he was keen to mix things up and go in a different direction.

When asked to explain the decision, Parker said: “He obviously missed a bit of training in the week and we just felt that we probably needed to change it up, so that was the main decision.”
