Former Chelsea star Jason Cundy heaps praise on Leeds United

Dominic Calvert-Lewin came close towards the end against Manchester City

Leeds United will feel hard done by after slipping to a 1–0 defeat against Manchester City at Elland Road on Saturday night.

For much of the first half, it was Leeds who looked in control. They pressed high, forced mistakes and carried the greater threat, but couldn’t turn their dominance into a goal. That failure to capitalise proved costly when City winger Antoine Semenyo struck late on to hand the visitors the advantage.

There was no shortage of controversy either. Leeds were convinced they should have had a penalty for handball, a call that never came. Emotions boiled over at the final whistle, with Daniel Farke sent off after making his feelings known a little too forcefully to referee Peter Banks.

Leeds had Manchester City on the ropes in several moments. However, the title-chasing team held on and escaped Elland Road with three points.

Jason Cundy credits Leeds for a solid performance

Dominic Calvert-Lewin came close to scoring towards the end that could have earned Leeds a point. However, Marc Guehi and Ruben Dias were brilliant in preventing the home side from scoring.

Cundy lavished praise on Leeds for pushing Manchester City to their limits and bringing the best out of their two central defenders at Elland Road.

He feels Calvert-Lewin could not dominate aerially because of the two Manchester City centre-backs. However, he feels Leeds deserve credit for what they did on Saturday night.

Cundy said on talkSPORT: “Calvert-Lewin, towards the end, they had a right go, Leeds.

“Fair play to Leeds.

“Manchester City’s rearguard action – defending and winning headers.

“I am not sure Calvert-Lewin won a header when the ball came into the box.

“Those two were outstanding.”

The Whites have pushed most top teams

It tells a lot about how far the team have come this season that Leeds were left disappointed to lose against Manchester City at Elland Road.

Manchester City needed a late goal at home to beat Leeds earlier in the season, and the Whites deserved at least a point on Saturday night.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have struggled against Leeds this season, and they deserved to beat Aston Villa in the Midlands last weekend.

Arsenal are the only top team that have beaten Leeds comfortably twice this season. All other top teams have had issues with the Yorkshire giants.

Leeds are not safe yet. However, they do not resemble a team that will get relegated from the Premier League in the coming months.
