Opinion: I saw an Everton star stake major claim to win end of season PL award vs Newcastle

Everton picked up three big points away from home against Newcastle United, and Jordan Pickford surely made the save of the season.

The Toffees edged a thrilling contest at St. James’ Park, beating the Magpies 3-2.

The result puts Everton back on track in their hunt for European football, and was a great response to the frustrating defeat against Manchester United on Monday.

It was a brilliant display by Everton, but one that was almost spoiled by Sandro Tonali in injury-time.

But Jordan Pickford’s remarkable save ensured it would be three points for Everton – and his save will surely secure him the Premier League Save of the Season award.

When Tonali’s boot connected with that ball in injury-time, I felt like time had stopped.

Newcastle had been knocking at the door and applying pressure, and there really was a worrying feel that Everton would let their lead slip.

In the 94th minute, Joelinton sent a ball into the Everton box, which was semi-cleared to the edge of the box.

Tonali then latched onto the ball as it dropped out of the sky, striking perhaps the cleanest ball he’s ever hit.

The power he generated was quite remarkable. And yet, somehow, I watched Pickford keep it out.

Showing cat-like reflexes, Everton and England’s number one diverted the ball onto the crossbar, leaving the travelling Toffees fans ecstatic and Tonali and the Newcastle faithful dumbfounded.

Some have argued that the strike was at a decent height for him and not in the corner. But the venom on that ball made this a extremely difficult save to make. But save it, he did.

And it even led to Eddie Howe branding Pickford ‘outstanding’ after the game.

Pickford has previously won one Premier League Save of the Season award, claiming the inaugural one at the end of the 2021/22 campaign for the one he made against Chelsea, denying Cesar Azpilicueta.

Surely, this one against Newcastle will end up carrying him to a second gong. Because it’s hard to believe this being bettered between now and the end of the campaign, it was that good.

Arguably, it’s one of the all-time best saves we’ve seen in the Premier League.

Where would Everton be without Pickford?

It would have been gutting to see Everton drop two points at the end of yesterday’s game.

But Pickford ensured that didn’t happen, and it is not the first time he’s won the Toffees points through his remarkable saves.

It has been a turbulent past few years for Everton, with the club battling against relegation several times.

And Pickford has simply played a huge role in the club remaining in the top-flight.

Without his consistency, there is every chance that Everton could be in the Championship now, and when all is said and done, he will go down as a legend of this club,
