Why Everton's win against Newcastle puts them in good company with Ronald Koeman's 2016/17 side

Everton defeated Newcastle United 3-2 in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Iliman Ndiaye was actually awarded the Man of the Match by Everton supporters, but credit should also go to Jordan Pickford for his match-winning save.

Victory takes David Moyes’ side on to 40 points, which is the quickest time they’ve reached that tally since the 2016/17 campaign.

Ronald Koeman’s men got to the 40-point milestone on the 4th of February, compared to this season on the 28th.

That year, Everton finished in seventh place on 61 points, so if this current group of players were to replicate that feat, it’d see them qualify for the Conference League.

How many points are Everton projected to finish on?

Everton are only three points behind the Conference League spot and five adrift of Chelsea, who occupy a Europa League position.

The Toffees are currently averaging 1.4 points per game, which would see them finish on around 54 points come the end of the season.

That probably wouldn’t be enough for a European finish, so they will have to put a run together to give themselves a good chance.

Everton’s home form has been their Achilles heel, but hopefully that all changes on Tuesday when they take on Burnley at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

What did you make of this man against Newcastle? 👏

He simply MUST keep his spot in the XI to face Burnley! 🔥

Beto celebrates his goal for Everton in the away victory against Newcastle United.

Speaking after the win at St James’ Park, Branthwaite addressed the home form: “Our away form has been top class all season and the home form is something that we need to get better at.

“We need to pick up more points at home and we are working on that as a team. The last showing at home against Manchester United was a step in the right direction, so hopefully we can build on that.

“It is always difficult when you are so used to something to move away and to come to something new but it is not an excuse. We’ve been there all season and the home form needs to change.”
