Pundit 'baffled' after Sunderland denied "clear penalty" against Cherries

Enzo Le Fee went down under the challenge of Alex Jimenez, and referee Jarred Gillett waved away appeals for a spot kick from the Black Cats.

VAR agreed that it was the right call, ruling that there was ‘normal contact’.

But many disagreed, and Williams said on the BBC show that Gillett had got the call “completely wrong”.

“He's got a good view of it, first and foremost, so his view's not blocked, he can see it,” Williams said.

“We see Jiménez into the back of Le Fee, and it's a clear penalty. There's a little bit of forearm in there, a little bit of leg makes contact, he's gone over.

“Le Fee is baffled, and so am I, because that is a penalty. To compound it and make it worse, this was a few minutes afterwards, Hume's on the ball. I think that's less contact and he's given that foul.

“So we're just asking for a little bit of consistency from the refs. If you haven't given one and you give the one a couple minutes later, this is why everyone gets frustrated with it.”

Shearer agreed: “I think it's a penalty as well. Definite penalty.”

The former Newcastle striker praised Marcus Tavernier, too, for his delivery for Evanilson’s second half equaliser at the Vitality Stadium, calling it a “forward’s dream”.

“No surprise when you're going to give a player this amount of space and he takes a couple of touches and the only thought is for him to whip the ball in,” Shearer said, analysing the goal.

“There's one touch, there's a second, but the cross is just a forward's dream to get on the end of it, and it's crying out for someone to say, go on, I've put it, not on a plate for you, but I've put it in such a dangerous position.

“I mean, Evanilson somehow finds the back of the net, whether it was his shoulder or whatever, it doesn't matter, but it deserved to go in the back of the net after this ball and the pace on it, it's a defender's nightmare and goalkeeper's nightmare, but brilliant for the forward.

“You see his reaction, got them back in the game.”
